GMOs Are In Many Popular Foods, But Are They Safe For Young Bodies?

The term “genetically modified organism” (GMO) may not be one that exists in most people’s everyday lexicons — but it is one that needs exposure, because GMOs are found in many products we buy today.

GMOs are foods whose chemical structures have been modified, the World Health Organization reports, and can introduce new allergens into food as well as contribute to antibiotic resistance, according to a scientific study published in Nature Education.

Moreover, GMOs can be found in many of the foods and products we give to our children these days, the FDA reports. Infant formula, baby bottles, baby foods — these are all products that are made for children, who have highly susceptible immune systems, as defined by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

In 1986, the first intergovernmental document to address issues surrounding the use of GMOs was released; a study by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, titled “Recombinant DNA Safety Considerations.” This document recommended that risk assessments be performed on a case-by-case basis. Since then, the case-by-case approach to risk assessment for genetically modified products has been widely accepted; however, the U.S. has generally taken a product-based approach to assessment, the Nature Education study reports.

“Proponents of the use of GMOs believe that, with adequate research, these organisms can be safely commercialized,” writes Theresa Phillips, Ph.D. “GMOs benefit mankind when used for purposes such as increasing the availability and quality of food and medical care, and contributing to a cleaner environment. If used wisely, they could result in an improved economy without doing more harm than good, and they could also make the most of their potential to alleviate hunger and disease worldwide. However, the full potential of GMOs cannot be realized without due diligence and thorough attention to the risks associated with each new GMO on a case-by-case basis.”

Until individual GMOs are proven safe, they shouldn’t be used in ANY of our products, especially those widely used by young children. Click below and tell the FDA to stop allowing the use of these products until it has proven them safe for human consumption.
