Popular Fitness Instructor Encourages Others to Maintain Routine Check Ups After Her Breast Cancer Diagnosis

For over twenty years, Rhonda Murphy has encouraged locals in Fresno, CA to stay fit and healthy through her Workout Wednesdays featured on ABC30. She also replicates this program on her gym’s Facebook page, transforming them into livestreams. Typically, these short clips are informative messages about eating healthy and staying active, with tips and demonstrations along the way. Rhonda’s most recent Workout Wednesday, however, focused on a different message this week.

During a recent, routine mammogram, Rhonda learned that she has Stage 1, Grade 3 breast cancer. “It’s Stage 1. Because I did my routine mammograms, they caught it,” she explained in her Facebook Live video. Rhonda shared this personal moment of her life with her followers to get an essential message across. “I want you to promise me, every one of you, promise me that you’re going to get a check up,” she implored.

Being a health-conscious trainer who had no symptoms, not even a lump, Rhonda was blindsided by the results and wants to make sure everyone knows the importance of maintaining those routine exams. “If I can have one of you, just one of you, catch it — it’s going to make my life worth it.”

Rhonda is now scheduled to undergo six treatments of chemotherapy, followed by surgery and radiation. “I’m a health expert but again, this thing, cancer, it does not discriminate,” she explained to ABC30. “It’s an equal opportunity crusher.” Rhonda’s many friends, supporters, and followers have created a GoFundMe page to help her with medical expenses.

Through tears she said, “It is unbelievable. I got to tell you, I didn’t know I had that many friends. It’s amazing and I’m so thankful. I got some incredible people in my corner.” Rhonda is ready to take this challenge head on, and will be continuing her livestreams for as long as she feels well enough to do so. If you’d like to learn more about Rhonda’s journey, or if you’re interested in participating in a Workout Wednesday or Fitness Friday, be sure to check out her Facebook page.
